Organized at Philadelphia by consolidation of:

Robert's Battalion Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, assigned as Companies C, D and F

Segebarth's Battalion Marine Artillery, assigned as Companies A, B, G, H, K and L

1st Battalion Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, assigned as Company E

Two more Companies organized at Philadelphia as Companies I & M.

Ordered to Fortress Monroe, Va. Attached to Camp Hamilton, 7th Corps, Dept. of Virginia.

Company H served detached at Baltimore, Md., entire term

 

Detachments of all Companies except H served at times in Graham's Naval Brigade and participated in numerous engagements on the James, Chickahominy and Nansemond Rivers.

A section of Company H was at Gettysburg. It brought 52 men to the field.

 

The section, part of the Baltimore defences, had been stationed at a location about to be overrun by Stuart's Cavalry and was attached to the Union Cavalry Corps.

 

From the monument at Gettysburg:

"Battery H 3rd Penna. Heavy Artillery, 1st Brigade, 2d Division Cavalry Corps

Mounted as a battery of light artillery May 6, 1863. Second section participated in the battle."

From the marker at Gettysburg:

"Army of the Potomac Cavalry Corps, Second Division First Brigade, 3rd Penna. Heavy Artillery Section Battery H, Two 3 Inch Rifles, Captain William D. Rank

 

July 2. Marched with the 2d Cavalry Division and went into position on the Hanover Road 3 miles from Gettysburg.

 

July 3. In position here in early morning and was engaged in the afternoon assisting in the repulse of Longstreet's assault. Loss Missing 1 Man"

Company M served as Siege Artillery, Army James, in siege operations against Petersburg and Richmond May, 1864, to May, 1865. Posted principally on the Bermuda Hundred front.
