Organized at Tuscumbia around the 3rd Alabama Infantry Battalion unde Colonel William Russell Smith; Smith eventualy resigned to become a member of the Confederate Congress.

1862

Two companies are detached under Major John S. Garvin and captured at Fort Donelson, but are exchanged and rejoin the regiment in Virginia.

Ordered to report to General Magruder at Yorktown

Battle of Chancellorsville

Leading the charge in Jackson's flank attack, the 26th briefly lost ts colors but counterattacked and recovered them, suffering 13 killed and 85 wounded. Captains Thomas Taylor and R. K. Wood are killed; Colonel O'Neal is wounded for the third time, Lt. Colonel John Garvin and Captain E. M. Vandiver are also wounded. Lieutenant M. J. Taylor was in command of the regiment at the close of the battle.

Under temporary command of Colonel John C. Goodgame. The regiment suffered 7 killed and 58 wounded and 65 missing; Lieutenants John Fowler and W. L. Branyon are klled.
